Carol Sooby Obituary - Newton, KS (The Kansan)

Carol Nadine (Schmidt) Sooby, 77, passed away peacefully at her home in Newton on Sunday (June 11, 2017) with her husband Donald by her bedside.
She was born on June 12, 1939, in Walton, the daughter of Charles W. and Edna Berg Schmidt. Spending her early life on a farm near Walton, Carol attended Walton schools and graduated from Walton High School in 1957.
Carol has four children from a previous marriage to Jerry Schmidt: Kim Lee, Allan Ray, Lynette and Jeffery Linn.
Carol and Don Sooby were wed in 1975 at the Hillcrest Community Foursquare Church in Newton where Carol had been a member since the late 60s. Joining Carol's children in the new family were Don's children, Krista Lee and Todd Wayne.
Carol had a love of music and enjoyed playing the piano at church and home. With an enormous love for children, Carol owned and operated Butterfly Daycare for several years in Newton and Great Falls, Montana. The children loved her "scratch" soup and often asked their parents for "scratch soup like Carol Sooby makes." Her soup was homemade chicken and noodles made with fresh ingredients and all the love in Carol's heart as her secret ingredient.
Carol was diagnosed in Great Falls with the early onset of Parkinson's Disease and spent the remainder of her life fighting this disease. Carol and her husband Don returned to Newton in 1983.
In 2002, Carol was privileged to have bi-lateral deep brain stimulators (then a new procedure) implanted to alleviate many Parkinson's symptoms at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Although not a cure, this procedure added several quality years to Carol's life.
She leaves behind her husband Don of the home in Newton; her children Allan Ray Schmidt and wife Julie of Paola, Lynette Kay Hjuleberg and husband Nathan of Anoka, Minnesota; stepchildren Todd Wayne Sooby of Big Spring, Texas, Kristal Lee Sooby Brecheisen and husband Tim of Amarillo, Texas; brother Richard Schmidt and wife Laverna of Bozeman, Montana; sisters Marilyn Ruby and husband Mark of Illinois, and sister Jeanne Banulski and her husband Tom of Dixmont, Maine; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Carol is also survived by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Cline and Judy Sooby Gronau of Newton.
Carol is preceded in death by her parents and two children, Kim Lee Schmidt and Jeffery Linn Schmidt.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday (June 14, 2017) at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Walton Cemetery.
