HISTORY OF BUTLER COUNTY 644 cont'd

Elisha Mosier, a well to do farmer and stockman and substantial citizen of Fairview township, is a native of Ohio. He was born in Morgan county, August 23, 1838, and is a son of Eleazer and Abigal (Fall) Mosier, natives of Maine, who went to Ohio with their respective parents at an early day. The Mosier family is of English descent; Elisha Mosier's great-grandfather, Daniel, was a native of England.

Elisha Mosier was reared to manhood and educated in Ohio, and in 1866, was married to Miss Lucy Ann Eveland, a daughter of Daniel and Louisa Eveland, natives of Ohio. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Mosier lived on a farm in Morgan county, Ohio, about ten years. They then went to Iowa and settled in Wanplow county, where they remained four years, and removed to Jasper county, Iowa. They followed farming with indifferent success here until 1885, when they sold their land and came to Butler county, Kansas. Upon coming here, they bought a quarter section of land in section 27, Fairview township. This land was unimproved with the exception of a little one-room stone house, 6x8 feet. This building was torn down and the stone used in the construction of his present residence. When Mr. Mosier bought his place here, he went in debt for a large part of the purchase price. He engaged in the stock business and general farming and has met with very satisfactory success. His place is an ideal stock farm, being amply supplied with good water, and the soil is of a rich and productive character.

To Mr. and Mrs. Mosier have been born the following children: Daniel E., Lincoln county, Oklahoma; Stephen A., Lincoln county, Oklahoma; Henry, deceased; Louisa, married Frank Buckler, Lincoln county, Oklahoma; Elizabeth, married A. G. Zimmerman, and lives on the home place in Fairview township; Mary Belle, married Shirley Ratts, Reno county, Kansas; Jane, married Chas. A. Ray, Butler county; Lodema May, married Herbert Sooby, Butler county; George D., Butler county; Florence Ulda, married A. Ray, Champaign, Ill. Mrs. Mosier died February 19, 1905. Since coming to Butler county, Mr. Mosier has built up a reputation for honesty and integrity, which gives him a place among the best citizens of this section of the State.

Elbing, Butler County, Kansas

ELBING, ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE

By 1910 Elbing's population had reached 100. The following statistics are recorded
Chas. Turner, banker; Arthur and Frederic Sooby, blacksmiths; Harry Cassel, lumber salesman;

BUSINESSES AND PROFESSIONS

On the east side of Main Street were the Kirkwood Lumber Yard, the Sooby Blacksmith shop, a barber shop, a cafe, and other offices. At one time, Elbing also had a hotel and restaurant used mainly by salesmen who traveled from town to town.

Clayton Sooby was the son of Fred and Myrtle Patton Sooby, who were members of the Elbing Methodist Episcopal Church. Fred and Myrtle had two sons, Don and Clayton, and one daughter, Helen. Fred was widely known as a good blacksmith.

Clayton attended the Elbing Grade School, and the Peabody and Newton High Schools. He and Helen drove to Newton in a stripped down car and repeatedly tried to set a new speed record.

Clayton married Irene Porter of Peabody whom he had learned to know in High School days. They had three daughters: Beverly, Kay, and Judy, and a son, Don. Don is a radio announcer. Beverly Sooby Ralph now lives in Leavenworth, Kansas.

Kay Sooby Stevens lives in Denver and has sent us some of her experiences in Elbing. She writes:

'My living in Elbing goes back forty-eight years. I remember only the fun things. Going to Grandma Sooby's house and playing in the barn. Putting pennies on the railroad tracks. I remember climbing to the top of the lumber yard and robbing birds nests . . . playing in the old cars back of the shop. I remember riding my wonderful wooden scooter, climbing up in the barn and catching pigeons ... the wonderful black licorice pipes, the tornado that blew the roof off ourgarage. I remember Pearl and Earl Hamilton, who lived across the street from grandma's ... the peppernuts we got at Christmas time, the school house across the street from our home.'

Judy Sooby Gronau runs a craft shop in Newton. She utilizes old doors to design interesting art pieces for her exhibits. She reminds me of the creativeness of her father; both have designed and built many wooden toys for children. In an interview with her recently, she recalled the period when her father worked in the South American oil fields and made toys for the children in those areas.

Judy also remembers when her father worked in the Elbing bank. He kept in close contact with the staff in later years. He and Don changed their father's blacksmith shop to an automobile repair shop where Clayton became a very good mechanic.

They also worked on windmills. Judy still has a part of a windmill supporting leg on which is inscribed, "Sooby Brothers." It is interesting to see how versatile Clayton was moving from one business to another. Those who knew him remember his friendly smile and his love for children.

ELBING BUSINESS VENTURES IN 1992

Epp Service Company is owned and operated by Virgil Epp. Virgil's father, Frank Epp, moved to Elbing from Mingo, Kansas in 1946 and took over the Sooby Brothers' Repair Shop for cars and farm tractors.

Walter Dyck Remembers Elbing

Other vivid memories cluster around the two-room grade school. This was the old building. Clayton Sooby and I were in the same grade. Since we were neighbors we studied eighth grade arithmetic at home during our seventh year. Anna Kieler, the upper grade teacher, encouraged the two of us to tussle with algebra and geometry in the eighth year. (Clayton had a mathematical mind.) Years later Clayton and I drove to Peabody to visit Margaret and Annie Kieler in their retirement.

Another remembrance was the Sooby blacksmith shop. I can still see Fred standing at the forge turning the blower by hand and stoking the glowing embers. I can also still hear the clang of the heavy hammer by which the cutting edges of the iron plow shares were sharpened. When heated they turned red and even near white. These edges were then hardened by plunging them into water or treating them with a special flux (hardening agent). All this was done during extreme hot summer days. Often Mr. Sooby worked early in the morning or late at night to avoid the heat.

Louis A. Janzen, Retired Farmer and
Stockman of Elbing, Kansas

Another instance comes to mind. I went to the Sooby blacksmith shop with my older brother. I saw a rifle in the middle room. Being still part boy, I grabbed the rifle and pulled the trigger. To my surprise there was a hole in the roof. My older brother and the Sooby brothers were so frightened by this act that nobody said anything. I apologized and learned a lesson from this careless act.
