Mr. Sooby was born in Wilkes-Barre, a son of the late Joseph Sooby Sr. and 3 CONT Margaret James Sooby. He was a graduate of Coughlin High School, Class of 1942. He served as a Technician Third Grade with 3 CONT the Detached Medical Department of the Army's 132nd General Hospital in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II. 3 CONT He received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal with 3 CONT one Bronze Star and the World War II Victory Medal. Following his military service, he received a B.A. degree from 3 CONT Bucknell University in 1949 and a Master's degree from the University of Michigan in 1951. He then served as a research 3 CONT assistant at the Michigan Natural History Museum and participated in field work in Jalisco, Mexico. He was awarded his 3 CONT teacher's certification from the University of Michigan's School of Education. He began his career as a biology teacher 3 CONT in Jackson Mich., later teaching for 30 years at Tappan Junior High School and finally at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School 3 CONT until his retirement in 1984. During this time, he also did graduate work at Rutgers University and a Ohio State 3 CONT University. 3 CONT Following his retirement, he moved to the Columbus, Ohio, area in 1984 and enjoyed his hobbies of music, gardening 3 CONT and English Culture. He has recently returned to live in Wilkes-Bare. He was baptized and confirmed in the former 3 CONT Calvary Episcopal Church, (now, Holy Cross Parish), Wilkes-Barre. In 1976, he became an active member of the Centeral 3 CONT Ohio Welsh Society and of the Buckeyes Bulldog Club. He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his 3 CONT stepmother, Lugretta Sooby; and his longtime friend, Dr Donald Vernall, of Columbus, Ohio. Survifing are several cousins 3 CONT and close friends. A graveside commital service will be held today at 10:45am in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. 3 CONT The Rev. John Leo, associate rector, Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Wilkes-Barre, will officiate. There will be no calling 3 CONT hours. A memorial service will be conducted at a time to be announced at Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Wilkes-Barre, at 3 CONT a futture date.
