SCRUBY/SCROOBY/SOOBY
In many years searching this surname, have learned the the
interpretation of the name depends if we are justified in
identifying the place with Scroppen Thorpe of 1044. The two places
were certainly very close to one another and they may have been
identical. The site of SCROOBY (Nottinghamshire) was included
within the bounds of the Scroppen Thorpe. Skroppa is on record
as woman's name in Icelandic and it may be that Skropperby to
Scropby, Scrubby, and the like, rather to SCrooby, Scruby. There is
also an old Norse man's name Skropi, which by direct addtion to "by"
might yield Scrobi but Skropa would be a good deal more difficult
to associate with Scroppa.
Have recently heard of a Viking of Denmark named Sooby which has
opened another avenue of research. Anyone have suggestions or
addresses to lead me in that direction?
Thank you, in advance for any suggestions, ideas, theories ....
Sincerely,
Patricia O'Boyle
