Philidelphia News December 23, 2003

An elderly couple died in a fire that struck their Bristol Township home on Sunday night.
Howard Sooby, 83, died in the fast-moving fire while his wife, Lillian, 86, died on the way to St. Mary Medical Center in Middletown, officials said. A third occupant, Eleanor Thomas, 89, Lillian Sooby's sister, escaped uninjured, authorities said.
The blaze was reported at about 5:15 p.m. Sunday and several rescue companies responded. Assistant Fire Marshal Tom Krutsch said the cause was under investigation, but a supply of wood was apparently stacked too close to the stove and caught fire.
They were sitting in the kitchen eating, and when they looked out to the living room there was a fire in the wood-burning stove, Krutsch said. He said Howard Sooby apparently went in to fight the fire and lost his life in that attempt.
